Cayen’s Meet The Parents sessions

I was not so sure what to expect. Touchwood but there wasn’t much complaint or feedback from teachers this year so I had hoped no news is good news.

General feedback. No problem with work as per normal. Does his work very fast but because he’s so fast, he has no one to play with so he will have to go to drawing corner to draw. Very creative in his drawings as he concocts his own stuff. Same goes for compositions where Teacher says his stories are quite interesting and reflects actual life though he still needs to work on making them coherent as he may jump from idea to idea.

His chinese work is surprisingly very neat and tidy (compared to what I saw at home). Apparently the Chinese Teacher worked out that since he always writes fast so he can finish fast , but she would erase his work until it is of the right quality. Once he figured out that he can’t squirm out of it, he started to write properly. The same teacher also observed that because of the same 小聪明 and some laziness,he would always try to clarify and push boundary every now and then. For instance, they have no formal lessons during June holidays but teachers still ask them to practice the spelling in the morning before games . On the second day, he still went and ask if they need to do spelling or they can play. He asked again on the third day just to try again. On the fourth day, he resigned himself to fate and went about his spelling.

In terms of reading, he’s considered a good reader as he is comfortable with English and Chinese. However , Chinese teacher realises that he will skip over words that he doesn’t know instead of clarifying with teacher like the other kids. I suspect he just wants to get it over and done with so he can start his games. So now, Teacher also found a way to handle him , which is to make him read out to her so she can catch his little tricks here and there.

English teacher said he loves to sing. He’s singing everywhere , from the classroom to the toilet. Chinese teacher concurred and added that he was the only kid who could sing to the recent tune she introduced which had a little more adultish / pop song beat (whatever that means). That reminds me of the time he started singing to Jay Chou after Ah Pa played it repeatedly on Google Home for a few weeks. Maybe I should pay some attention to his love for singing.

I also asked the teacher if he has any problem sharing . I recall that was an issue last year and year before. Teacher said there’s no issue because she would stop the games and let the kids negotiate how they want to sort it out. So over time, everyone figured that it is better to share so no more conflict . *nice move*

However, teacher did say that he, together with a batch of kids (I clarified thereafter that it’s all the boys in fact) that are always fighting to be the first in line for everything. So that’s the usual point of conflict nowadays if any.

Overall, he is fairly alright this year but need to work further on his sitting skills and improve his ability to do work unsupervised. But that’s good enough for me !
