My multilingual baby

Image
That day , we were in the car with Z and as usual Cayen was fidgety. So in order to entertain him, we asked him to say 1 to 10 in English, Chinese, Japanese and Cantonese. Z (4 year old) was quite surprised and asked me with big innocent eyes, "is he Singaporean?" To which, we all laughed. Today Cayen was in good form so we asked him to perform again. He actually did and threw in a 小白兔 repertoire too. Haha. YouTube Video - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Like mother like son

Image
That day I saw some pictures of Cayen playing with green beans in school. It didn't struck me that they were trying to get the kids to grow some sprouts. After the sprouts came out, the teacher asked Cayen to bring home to show us. He immediately rejected. He didn't like it much. After much cajoling , he brought it home with him. When he came home, we asked if he liked the ”dao gei" (beansprout in Hokkien) , he promptly said "菜mai" (Vegetable, no!) .  While I was lamenting how he really dislikes vegetables or anything that resembles it, my mum couldn't resist gibing that I don't even eat beansprouts and am so picky when it comes to vegetabless , so what should I expect from my son.. Sigh .. Sometimes I wonder why he only takes after my shortcomings.  Anyway, thankfully at least he's into corn .. In fact he's super into corn.

When there's a snake in the car, who do you call ?

Image
That day when we went back to high school for the homecoming fair, we ran into a sticky situation. When we decided to adjourn to the next location, my friend's hubby found a snake crawling into car ! He didn't see the head but saw only the second half of the body and it was long enough. And he couldn't locate it after that.  We were discussing who to call.. Is it the police, civil defence or something ? Finally, he managed to contact someone from Acre and they arrived in ten minutes.  It was then that he realised they are a non profit organisation who helps to rescue these Animals from such situations, to avoid them from being killed in the process by pest busters or by other humans. They managed to reach so quickly as they were Enroute to save someone else nearby.  Such a noble cause ! Let's support them with donations and volunteering your time (if you are not as timid as I am). And the next time you encounter some animals that you don't know h

Parenting mishaps

Image
With Cayen's growing up, I had initially thought that our days of parenting mishaps are over ...  Yesterday, we were out at the diaper changing station and was changing Cayen using the pull up pants.  As we pulled off his existing pants, suddenly he started to pee! (This was an effect of recent toilet training efforts I think, as we try to get him to pee standing up, just before bathing). And before I know it, it was all over his shoes and floor. For 2 seconds, I was a little stone as every misstep might mean more pee all over our clothes and shoes. Thankfully, we were out very early so we were the only ones in the room. It took us quite a while to clean up the floor and clean him up.  It reminded me of our mishap in a Perth toilet where I spilled his diaper and pebbles of shit rolled all over the unisex toilet of a fine dining restaurant ..  Then, today, as after we changed his diaper, I still smelled a foul smell. Enroute to the bathroom to clean up a little more, we saw that a s

Life Art Museum

Image
This is at Suntec and not the Trick Eye Museums at Sentosa. (I was mistaken too, when I first saw the pictures.) I was not there so can't comment. However, from the looks of the pictures, it look interesting enough though I heard it didn't take long to cover all the exhibits.   Cayen probably found it interesting as he was running around happily, posing readily for most of the exhibits. Even from his angle, I bet he found the optional illusions or simply the colourful paintings fascinating.

That Barking sound

Image
In the day time, he was still ok. No flu, no cough .. Though there was the occasional (1-2 times in the entire day) cough that sounded more like a choke. That happened during his nap as well. He kinda had a cough and he woke up. It didn't seem serious so we reckoned a trip to the doctor the next day would be fine.  By night, as he was about to go to bed, things still seemed ok. However, at 2am, he seemed to have difficulty breathing and was crying uncontrollably. There was a barking / seal like sound that he was making and that was quite new to us. After half an hour of unstoppable crying, we decided to send him to KK hospital, kids A & E.  When we arrived, I was quite surprised it was almost full house. Although we have read "Dora goes to the doctor" a thousand times, Cayen was still quite rather hysterical when the nurse tried to use the stethoscope on him. To be fair, he was wailing profusely already so a stranger trying to get him to open his mouth and p

Places that you don't know exist in Singapore

Image
Well, it's my first time going to these places. Call me suaku (mountain tortoise) but it's good to know that there's still places left to explore in Singapore.  It was again an action packed weekend. We first want to the Kranji farms to visit the Hay Dairy goat milk place, the frogs farm (dark, damp and depressing), the place where we can feed the rabbits, goats, birds and catfish place. I think Cayen had great fun as he really loves to see animals eat in general and for once, everyone is encouraging him to throw as far as he can (for instance, the pallets to the catfish). Though I am born and bred in Singapore, I have never been to those farms ever. So that was quite an experience for me as well. It was also good that he fed those vegetables to the goats and carrots to the rabbits because I would use that to encourage him to eat his greens in the days to follow .. (🐑吃菜,小白兔吃菜,cayen 也要吃菜) In the afternoon, we went to  Donovan's first month's party. It w

I wanna go Gai Gai (play)

Image
This week, in the morning when he was asked if he would like to go to school, he will say he want to go "Gai Gai". I figure he must have liked all the spontaneous weekends of late , the latest being a full day of activities at the Science Centre.  While I lament at the high cost of visiting the science centre ($12/ adult for half an hour of omnimax show; $12/ adult and $23/kid for the new Kidstop play area; and around $10-12/ adult for entrance into the general science centre and some exhibits), I thought our science centre is now more interesting than I remember. Lots of things to explore. 老少咸宜 (universal appeal) I particularly like the earthquake simulation room, the typhoon simulation room, the fire tornado live demo and the omnimax show. A great place to spend the weekend , suitable for kids from 1 and above (if they can walk).  We didn't get to go to snow city because we did not wear trousers and socks. Else, that's another explorer option.
