Dental stories

Cayson had his first dental visit 2 weeks ago to investigate a funny gap in his teeth. Unfortunately, it’s the start of a cavity so dentist advised that some filling might be needed but perhaps on another day so he doesn’t get completely traumatised. For a first trip, he was quite apprehensive for the initial minutes but he acclimatised shortly, after we let him play computer games to distract him.

And so here we are, 2 weeks later, for the filling and we hope it works else we would need to transfer to a specialist if he’s not cooperative. Dentist was trying to get him to endure the filling for 5 counts, 7 counts and 10 counts progressively and he did it somehow. He’s so brave and cooperative (though I know he’s scared). Perhaps the free lego toy from last trip and the minecraft YouTube playing on screen now helped to distract him a bit as well. Kudos to the dentist who remembered his preferences from 2 weeks ago! The YouTube channel was set up for him before he even start arrived.

Cayen on the other hand also had his fair share of stories this month. For him, he’s been a little slow on the teeth dropping aspect in general to start with. His first tooth only dropped in Dec 19 (7 years old) when we were in JB when he was chomping on a potato chip and hence, I gave him his first tooth fairy money. He was quite angst when he “forgot to bring it back” to Singapore as he left the money lying on the coffee table.

His second followed a few weeks after, and I was trying to make up for it with the tooth fairy story. But he was like, “ I know it’s you putting the money there under my pillow, the tooth fairy is not real .. yada yada” Thereafter, since he doesn’t believe in it, I decided not to give him the $10.

Then, there was a drought where no other teeth would fall. This is quite belated for a 8 year old actually. The only news of more teeth falling only came around two weeks ago when he announced that two more teeth were shaky.

After phrase 2 started, we went out for fish head hotpot one Saturday and I reminded him to be careful in chewing as one tooth was already hanging by the thread. However, when the food arrived, as usual, he stuffed a big spoonful of rice and meat into his mouth greedily and suddenly there was a scream.

He accidentally swallowed his tooth!

Then he started wailing loudly in the restaurant as he’s so sad that his tooth has dropped out and he has eaten it. (I think I would be quite traumatised too.)  He had wanted to keep it originally (just like how he even wanted to keep certain food wrappers.. a sentimental old soul aka hoarder) . It was so hard for us to eventually calm him down. However, thankfully the food was delicious enough and he went on to chomp down 1.5 bowls of rice and forgot about his tooth.

A few days thereafter, suddenly when we were at home, he suddenly screamed again. And it so turned out he was wriggling the remaining shaky tooth so much that it came out ! This time round, the reaction was a lot more muted and we were over the event in 3 minutes. However, after so much drama, there’s still 16 more baby teeth to go.. wonder how long we would take to replace his entire set of baby teeth.

Just like me, his teeth are all so small, I can’t quite make out the adult teeth from the baby teeth actually.  Think I should have a picture to try to mark out the ones that dropped so I can remember.  Plans for another day.
