Week of theatre

Last Saturday , we went to the long awaited Peppa Pig show at the Resorts World Theatre at Sentosa where hundreds of kids and adults gathered in great excitement. They put up a song and dance of all the regular songs in the Peppa Pig cartoons so Cayen could identify with it. However, given the price of the tickets, I was quite surprised that the Peppa Pig characters didn't come out in Life size mascots . Instead , toy size versions were held and manoveured by human actors. The plot and the props were usual for a kids production but nothing very creative or special. To be honest, I was bored stiff and thankfully Ah Pa didn't join and was waiting outside.

Yesterday, we went for Gingerbread Man at the Raffles Hotel theatre that was a lot smaller and cosier. In this theatre, they used mainly human actors to play out the characters in the story including Gingerbread man , and in a few settings ,  the toy size gingerbread man came out appropriately to depict a smaller size man as he was running away in the distance. There was some creative play on words as well so as an adult, I felt sufficiently entertained. However, when I asked Cayen and Sarah which play they liked better, they all like Peppa Pig. Perhaps it was all about age appropriateness since this play was for 3-10 years and they barely reached 3. But given that Cayen was sufficiently absorbed in the entire performance and kept stealing glances at  Ah Pa or me when he found something tickling, I think this had been enjoyable for him. And the ticket is only a fraction of  the Peppa Pig one. Think I will surely go for more local kids productions in future.

Now that the little one has got his theatre fix, it's then time for the big ones to finally enjoy some adult theatre at night. It was my first time watching Japanese theatre and this was rather different and interesting actually. There was clever play of lighting effects , imagery and music. Imagine various dances where computerised clones danced alongside the real person and glow in the dark lighting on the performer. Finally , comparing the price of Peppa Pig, this is so much more worth it.

Overall , it was a delightful theatrical experience for me and for Da, he was of course very happy to be amongst so many Naruto / Manga lovers like him.
Going to all these theatre reminds me of how much I had liked all these in my youth. Hoping to resurrect this love by interweaving more kids and adult theatre going forward.
