Cayson's first day of school

It's Cayson's first day of school. For some reason, I couldn't quite sleep as I feel quite excited , apprehensive and curious for him as well. Given that he's the gung-ho one, and very friendly to other kids, I was quite optimistic that he would survive first day quite well.

And so we set off in the car, Cayen and Cayson on my left and right respectively. I asked Cayen how he felt about little brother going to school too. He said he's worried for him. I didn't think much of it except that it was the aftermath of watching Wonder which had themes of bullying in school and first day in school.

Cayson reached and first station was the check up section. Though I have practiced with him at home, he kind of froze when instructed by the teachers for the initial seconds. Guess he was still trying to get used to all these new faces. Then we brought him to put his shoes and bag in the shoe rack and cubicle. That went quite smoothly. He was quite strong, he had bag on one arm and his sleeping bag on the other.

As we said bye bye to him , he turned and said bye bye to the teacher. He didn't realise that he's staying. Thankfully he got distracted by a toy and so we sneaked out quietly. The school don't advocate parents staying in so we made our way out.

1.5 hour later, we heard from teacher that he had started crying. From the picture, it looked like he took his bag and wanted to leave the classroom - somehow despite his crying, he remembered he brought a bag. He had also instigated another kid to do so too .. oops.

I advised teacher that he liked food so some snacks might help. And watermelon did help for a while.

Apparently he was ok with the other kids but would cry in between transition in activities and wanted to be carried. He eventually lasted through till about 2.30 pm before teacher called us to pick him up as he couldn't stop crying. Cayen was sleeping so he couldn't help to comfort Cayson. So we decided to pick him up.

After Ah Pa picked him up, he kept  signaling  to Ah Pa to go in and said something that sounds like  , " I want chicken ". Ah Papa didn't get it at all as Cayson only knows single words right now. Cayson got irritated when Ah Pa didn't get it repeatedly.  Then he said , "umm umm" and finally Ah Pa understood that it's about food.

Just then, the teacher came by so Ah Pa took chance to clarify. Apparently he had chicken for lunch. In fact , he was given four servings (not sure if he asked or because I told teacher he had a good appetite). Anyway, it's super amazing that he can speak in a sentence after half a day of school. Either the chicken was really good or separation anxiety really inspired new level of expression.

Anyway, we will try again tomorrow. Not too bad for a first day for a 18 month old who's never been separated from us before. And in retrospect, perhaps Cayen had preempted how his little brother would feel on day 1. Hope tomorrow is easier for him !
